Oregon Ends Illegal Alien Drivers License Program

January 17, 2008 – 8:05 pm

The state of Oregon won’t be issuing drivers’ licenses any longer to illegal aliens, as Oregon takes action to make its licenses more secure. A well-organized, well-funded coalition has formed to protest that responsible, prudent, and intelligent action by the state government. That group, that coalition, well, they say it would make life more difficult for illegal aliens and would make the roads less safe. Roll video:

The Oregon Transportation Committee met Thursday to finalize the governor’s emergency rule and Oregon lawmakers now have to begin work on legislation to make the governor’s executive order law. While Oregon is tightening its rules, at the same time, the Michigan attorney general recently made this interesting ruling. Quote, “Only a resident of Michigan may be issued a Michigan driver’s license. A person who is not a lawful resident of the United States cannot be a resident of this state, Michigan, for purposes of obtaining a driver’s license.” It goes to the whole core of this debate.

  2. As a resident of Oregon all I can say it is about time the governor woke up!

Incidentally, having a driver’s license does not make the roads safer nor would it make the illegal allien accountable. That argument is a farce.

An illegal caught driving with or without a license should be sent back to the country from which they came. If we had been doing that from the beginning we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

  5. Thanks for your comment Heather. The real villain here is our corrupt Federal Government which continues to open our borders and invite foreign nationals into our country for use as cheap labor. If our existing laws were enforced, as they should be, we wouldn’t be in this mess. New laws won’t change anything.

  6. I was just about ready to buy property on the Oregon Coast when I found out that illegal aliens were allowed driver’s licenses in Oregon. Now, there has been some responsible change and will be a Law put in place to correct that horrid mistake. I am leaving California, grew up in Los Angeles, that now looks like a 3rd World Country not in the US at all, and will definately take another look at that property in Oregon after all. Did you know that if an illegal alien was to slam into you, it is highly unlikely you could do a damn thing about it? That’s just not fair is it! Good move by the Oregon Gov!

  7. The arguments posted here are shallow and full of fear. Giving non-residents licenses gave them the opportunity use car insurance. If they didn’t have insurance, they were held responsible and were forced to pay for the damange, along with having to buy expensive insurance for three years. Now people are still driving, but they CAN’T buy car insurance. If a person who’s scraping by to support his family needs to drive to work to keep his job, then he’s going to drive to work, regardless of whether or not he has a license. Also, when non-residents could get licenses, they first had to take the written and driving test just like everyone else. Many non-residents took driving classes, and are now responsible drivers. However, since the opportunity for a license has been taken away, there is no way to ensure safe drivers on the road. The law did not stop illegal drivers; rather, it made the rate of unprepared, uninsured drivers skyrocket. It’s a stupid policy that is going to affect all of us.

  8. Kelly, thank you for your comments. The real problem here is our Federal Government refuses to deal with the problem of illegal immigration by not securing our borders and enforcing existing laws.

Non-residents aren’t the issue, illegal immigration is. If you are here legally on a visa, contributing to society, and paying your taxes — you can have a drivers license and get car insurance. If you are here illegally, you cannot.
